Apple rolls out new iPod shuffle

Updated mid-sized iPod finds inspiration in the past

Speaking at a special press event in San Francisco on Tuesday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced a new version of the company's iPod shuffle, featuring a smaller enclosure and a new connection for charging and transfering music.

Following anouncements of new configurations to the 5G iPod and iPod nano, the shuffle represents a refresh to Apple's entire product line.

Half the size of its predcessor, the new iPod shuffle holds 1GB of music, and looks like a smaller version of the Apple Remote. The aluminum enclosure now sports a built-in clip to attach easily to clothing.

The headphone jack also serves as the connection to connect and charge the shuffle. Apple reports that the new shuffle will have up to 12 hours of battery life when fully charged.

Apple is referring to the new shuffle as "the world's smallest digital music player."

The new iPod shuffle costs $79, and will be available starting in October.
